As a short game master, Dave Pelz is the go-to guy to the best of the best. Anyone who follows short game instruction already knows about him and his contributions to the short game. Major pros such as Phil Mickelson seek out the advice and guidance of Pelz when they need help, and they do this for a reason: he is truly a short game guru.
Many golfers may not know it but Dave is a former NASA physicist. While he may be a real-life rocket scientist, his method of training and instruction is suitable for even the average golfer. His books, including Dave Pelz's Short Game Bible and Dave Pelz's Putting Bible are considered to be some of the best short game resources on the planet for both amateurs and pros alike.
Dave’s scientific background is the basis of his short game teaching philosophy. He has analyzed the short game, which he calls the “scoring game” and has determined that most golfers lose up to 80% of their shots to par from within 100 yards of the pin. Dave believes that each short game shot can be analyzed at a very high level of detail and that correct mechanics and a understanding of trajectory, lie, slope, and roll are key to getting the ball to the hole reproducibly.
One of my favorite short game quotes truly sums up his approach to the short game:
“Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.”
This statement, which appears in the book “10 Minutes a Day to Better Putting” that was shipped with the Putting Tutor training aid that I purchased from Pelz Golf, really hit home with me. If you have bad swing mechanics, more practice simply makes bad mechanics permanent.
In addition to authoring books, Dave Pelz shares this knowledge with others is through his three-day scoring game clinics at key resorts around the world. He has also produced some excellent short game training aids including the Putting Tutor, O-Balls, and the Chip Stick.
In addition to Dave Pelz’s involvement in teaching and in training-aid design, he has also worked in golf course design, wedge design, and golf broadcasting. He designed
The Short Course at The Club at Cordillera
, a 10-hole 1250 yard short game training course, for players of all abilities. With respect to wedge design, he has applied his name and ideas to both the Bobby Jones line of wedges, as well as his own Pelz wedges. On the broadcast side, he has served as a guest on several broadcasts hosted by The Golf Channel and major networks.
If you are looking for the complete short game package, Dave’s focus on research and development, and commitment to short game instruction are hard to beat. I highly recommend his books and training aids and know that your game will improve if you spend some time reviewing and practicing his drills.
